Last month I posted about how isolating UCalgary feels and how I wanna change that
A lot of you guys resonated with my mission which I was really happy to see.
As I mentioned in that post, I’m on a mission to make UCalgary feel less isolating.
And today, I’m taking a big step toward that goal, but I need your help.
After more than 300 hours of coding & research, I just publicly launched Orbit — an open-source IRL social app & community designed to empower every university student to find the people they want to surround themselves with.
Whether it’s through finding a friend who shares your ambitions or a partner who brings out the best in you, the ultimate goal is to help you find your crew, your Orbit
The app is about 80% done, but starting today you can join our Discord community to be part of this mission.
We need your feedback and suggestions so we can build an app that will ACTUALLY fulfill it’s goal. I’ve seen several UCalgary students attempt to build something like this but fail. It’s because they built the app with the assumption that it will help people. We’re not tryna do that so your feedback is ESSENTIAL for Orbit to have a chance at fulfilling it’s mission.
By joining the discord community, you’ll also get to meet other students striving to make the most out of their university experience by finding and connecting with the best people in university.
I talk more about Orbit’s manifesto/mission & vision and how you can be part of it in this video
And since the code is fully open-source, anyone can contribute — just reach out and I’ll help you get started. Here’s a quick demo of how it looks right now.
We’re hosting our first Orbit community meetup & user testing session: 📍 Hunter Student Commons (4th floor / Hunter Hub) 🗓 April 2nd at 3PM 📅 Calendar event link
Come by anytime between 3 and 5pm to play around with the app, hang out, and meet the team.
